John Otway has had a career spanning over 20 years, and is still a consumate
and highly popular entertainer. These days, he is better known for his
comic attempts to scale the heights of superstardom than his actual successes
- always taking the piss out of the whole idea of stardom and sending up
entartainment's sacred cows.
Actually his genius as an entartainer is what keeps his career going strong
after so long in the business. Though his shows are always hilarious, he
also has a rare talent for songwriting, from punk-rock through to classic
ballads and this is what his true fans come back time and again for.
Though in his own self-deprecating words he is a 'microstar', this description
does no justice to his talent as an extraordinary and talented all-round
entartainer and songwriter. He is a star, and it is not his only 'hit'
("Cor Baby That's Really Free" - the punk classic from 1997)
that proves it - it is the fact that Otway can fill the largest venues
in the land time and again, and consistently pull off a brilliant show.
